PRE SEASON RESULTS

  • Sat 23rd August - Cranleigh 1 v WPFC 2
Phoenix travelled to Cranleigh and for the first time this summer there was some decent pre season weather to match a decent performance. Returning centreback Lee Owen showed that despite the break he still hadn't lost his match sharpness and striker Efren Cruz returned following an 18 month absence with a groin injury. In a frantic end to end game Phoenix took the lead following some great build up play and as so often happens Larch was in the right place at the right time to tap in from four yards. Dan Searle put in a quality display at the back with Owen but a great finish from the Cranleigh winger made it 1v1 early in the second half. Coates in goal pulled off some awesome saves and his fine distribution was the catalist for some good passing moves one of which was finished by Nowacki to make it 2v1. Onto Eversly next week and the return of Sadler will only strengthen the side further.

  • Thur 21st August - WPFC Res 1 v West Byfleet Albion 4
The Reserves continued there program against GWA Div One side WBA and some poor defending meant they shipped four for the second game running. Despite the scoreline positives can be taken as the side created but failed to take numerous chances with Wardle causing the Albion defence all sorts of problems. Defensive errors handed the opposition three of there four goals but had Nowacki not blazed over from two yards minutes before half time the result could have been different. Herbert made it three in three games for the Phoenix as he grabbed there only goal in the first half.

  • Mon 18th August - Ockham 0 v WPFC 5
The first team stepped up there preparations for the new season with a comfortable victory away at Ockham. A commanding performance at centreback from Julian Ford contributed to the clean sheet in what is his last game before flying out to Australia to represent Great Britain in the Aussie Rules World Cup. New centre forwards Andy Hunter and Will Samuels combined well upfront and grabbed two goals each with Alun Watkins netting the fifth.

  • Mon 18th August - WPFC A 2 v Guildford City Weysiders B 3
Manager Steve Cavey was full of positives despite his A teams first real pre season game of the season ending in defeat to Weysiders. Some fine passing moves and great keeping from Stuart Harding were the highlights but in the closing stages a lack of fitness began to creep in so needs to be worked on. Goals came from Steve Glaister and Tony Forgan.

  • Sat 16th August - Surrey Athletic 4 v WPFC Res 3
Some late drop outs left the Res with a somewhat mixed squad for the match at Goldsworth Park. The cause was not helped further when influential defender Dan Searle was forced to leave the pitch with a head injury that later needed stitches. Once the side settled down things became abit more organised when defending and the side created some good chances. Jimmy Herbert grabbed two goals and Russ Heaps scored the other.

  • Sat 16th August - Surrey Athletic B 1 v WPFC B 3
Midfield dynamo's Dave Ferguson and Daryl Carter used every bit of there experience as they pulled the strings in what as a good performance from the B team. Despite a combined aged of 94 the old guard ran the show with Luke Kellett-Smith also performing well as centreback. Goals came from young talent Jordan Carter whose second was a fine curling shot round the keeper with Tony Forgan notching the other.

  • Tuesday 12th August - Hersham Boys 5 v Worplesdon Phoenix 0
A return fixture with Sunday side Hersham Boys and a reverse of the earlier pre season result. The game marked the debuts of two of last seasons successful under 16 team with both Ben Whittaker and Joe Fearnehough adapting well to senior football. Unfortunately the same could not be said of rest of the side.......in possession the passing football was great.....however defending left alot to be desired.

  • Saturday 9th August - Worplesdon Phoenix 5 v Pirbright 1
Pirbright were comprehensively beaten by a Phoenix side containing mainly Res and A/B team players. Pirbright started the stronger and if it wasn't for some fantastic keeping early on by Coates the score line could have been different. Phoenix goals were scored by Croci, Goldsby, Hunter, Nowacki and Wilson.

  • Monday 4th August - Worplesdon Phoenix 'A/B' 2 v Woking and Horsell 'B' FC 5
Phoenix were beaten by an experienced Woking & Horsell side with Michael Harplay and David Thompson grabbing the goals. Some poor defending cost the side early on as communication across the back four was non existent. The game featured no fewer than seven new Phoenix signings with Aussie Andy and Chris Goldsby both looking sharp in there first game for the club.

  • Saturday 2nd August - Smallfield 4 v Worplesdon Phoenix 1
A mix of 1st, Res and A's traveled to Horley for the game on Saturday morning. The side featuring four new signings started brightly playing some great passing football. Despite going a goal down to a long range free kick Worplesdon dominated most of the first half before equalising through Jimmy Herbert just after half time. Late in the game Smallfield grabbed three further goals as the Phoenix pushed forward in what was a open and free flowing encounter.

  • Tuesday 29th July - Hersham Boys 1 v Worplesdon Phoenix 7
Phoenix fielded a mixed side for the first friendly of the season. Will Samuels and 16 year old Joe Wyatt both scored on debut with familiar faces Croci, Jacks, Thomas and Larch (2) also getting in on the act.

1st Team crowned SILW Division One Champions

In Saturdays final game of the season the 1st team matched the acheivements of the Reserves by gaining a 4v0 win at Dunsfold to take the title ahead of Old Salesians on goals scored. With 25 minutes to go it didn't look good but three quick goals left the side needing one more for top spot. With 5 mins left on the clock and the Dunsfold goal under seige Tom Tickner deflected a cross into his own net to send the away fans wild.

Pavilion Finally Open

Sunday 20th April marked the official opening of the new pavilion with ex Spurs, Southampton and Worplesdon player David Howells doing the honours. Following years of planning and fund raising by many individuals most notably Alan Simpson and Dave Smith the dream is finally reality and the club now has changing facilities to match any in the local area.

The sun shone, Tapper knocked out 300 burgers and Tomo nursed a massive hangover from the previous evenings celebrations. A fantastic end to a fantastic season for a club that continues to move forward both on and off the field.

Reserves crowned CHAMPIONS elect

Congratulation to Luke Smith and his team of Champions for successfully defending their league title with one game still to play! A fantatstic effort and well deserved. Lets hope the First team can pull it out of the bag with 2 games to play and 6 points (and 6 goals) needed!
